The Jaw Surgery Procedure

img-8Many patients become apprehensive when they are told that they may require surgery to fix their bite. This is normal! However, we will go over the surgical procedure in detail with you at your consultation appointment and answer any questions you may have.

Corrective jaw surgery is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. You can expect to stay one night in the hospital after surgery, and approximately 95% of our patients are discharged the morning after surgery.

Although we will review a detailed list of post-operative instructions before your surgical date, you can expect to be on a liquid/soft diet for several weeks. In addition, we will use elastics to help guide your teeth into their brand-new bite. You will not be wired shut after the surgery. Although this used to be common practice after jaw surgery, our practice uses tiny titanium plates and screws to secure the jaws in their new position. These titanium implants do not set off airport alarms or disrupt MRI machines, and very rarely require removal.
