Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery
Orthognathic Surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is a specialized procedure where the bones of the lower or upper jaw are repositioned to create a stable bite and harmonious facial appearance.
When the teeth and jaws don’t come together and meet in alignment, chewing and joint function are impaired. Our surgeons can plan and perform a procedure to improve speech, chewing function, breathing, and facial aesthetics. Surgery can also treat sleep apnea in specific cases.
Orthognathic Surgery requires comprehensive treatment planning to ensure a good surgical experience and result for the patient. Your oral surgeon will work closely with your orthodontist to anticipate which dental and skeletal movements are necessary for you and create a customized treatment plan that will tailor to your situation. Dr. Mascarenhas has completed a fellowship in Orthognathic surgery after his medical and surgical training where he performed over 250 cases in one year; with this experience, you can feel confident you are in good hands for jaw surgery in Toronto!
Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?
The ideal candidates for orthognathic surgery are patients who have a significant underbite or overbite or with a jaw that is incorrectly positioned.
For a majority of patients, orthodontics alone can correct an improper bite and straighten the lower and upper teeth. However, in up to 20% of patients, despite proper orthodontics, the skeletal discrepancy is too great to be overcome with braces alone. In these scenarios, orthognathic surgery is recommended so that teeth and jaws can be aligned in their ideal, stable position.
Jaw surgery can aid in treating the following conditions, which may exist at birth or be acquired afterward due to a traumatic event to the facial skeleton:
- Difficulty in biting or chewing
- Lack of tooth show when smiling
- Inability to make lips touch without strain
- Birth defects or facial injury
- Open Bite (teeth do not touch together)
- Protruding Jaw
- Underbite
- Overbite
- Small Chin/Retruded Jaw
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Snoring
- Facial asymmetry
The Consultation and Surgical Planning
Before you make any decisions or begin treatment, we recommend you come to our office for a consultation appointment. At this visit, your surgeon will explain the different options available to you, and what each selection involves. We will also perform a complete examination, including a detailed head and neck exam and examination of your x-rays. As this is a major decision, we strongly encourage bringing along a family member.
At our practice, we use three-dimensional CT scans, digital scans of your teeth, and virtual surgical planning to illustrate your current situation and how it can be treated with corrective jaw surgery. You will be shown a detailed presentation on virtual surgical planning, as well as previous patient examples that have been treated with orthognathic surgery.

“I came in to see Dr. Mascarenhas for 2 dental extractions. I was so pleased with how the procedure went and that my recovery was fast and seamless – I went back to work the next day. This was an exceptional experience for me as I had gotten another tooth extracted at a different office about 3 years ago, and it hurt me for 3-4 months after; Dr. Mascarenhas’ work was flawless! I’m very thankful for the staff’s experience and professionalism.”
