What is Dental Bone Grafting?
After a tooth is extracted, the bone where it used to be begins to resorb. Over time, this can lead to insufficient bone being available to house a dental implant. In addition, the maxillary sinuses in the upper jaw can expand as we age, encroaching on the area of your upper teeth and once again providing insufficient stability for dental implant restoration.
In these situations, a dental bone graft is recommended to augment the quantity and quality of bone present. If an implant is placed in bone of insufficient quantity or quality, it is likely to fail in the future.
Fortunately, grafting bone tissue from other parts of the body or a tissue bank provides a solid foundation for the installation of dental implants.
What are the Different Types of Bone Grafts?
Minor defects can usually be grafted with bone from a tissue bank that is safe, biocompatible, and readily available. This includes a dental bone graft for a single tooth replacement or sinus lift procedure.
Major defects usually require a combination of bone from a tissue bank and the patient’s own bone. The patient’s bone can be harvested from other areas of the jaws or the body. We assess the quantity and quality of your bone in each region using a clinical exam, x-rays, and 3D scanning of the region. We then review the different options available to you if a bone graft is required.
Sinus Lift Procedure: If the sinus has expanded over time or is too close to the area of missing teeth, there will not be enough vertical height of bone to support an implant. A sinus lift procedure is used to raise the sinus membrane and place a bone graft underneath. The sinus lift procedure increases the height of the bone in that region and allows for dental implant either simultaneously or at a future appointment.
Ridge Expansion or Augmentation: If an area of missing teeth has an inadequate width of bone, a ridge expansion or augmentation procedure is done. In a ridge expansion, the bone is exposed and donor bone grafted to the region, often with a resorbable membrane placed over top. After several months, this bone integrates with your native bone to form a new, augmented ridge. A ridge expansion procedure is a standard procedure that is commonly performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

“I came in to see Dr. Mascarenhas for 2 dental extractions. I was so pleased with how the procedure went and that my recovery was fast and seamless – I went back to work the next day. This was an exceptional experience for me as I had gotten another tooth extracted at a different office about 3 years ago, and it hurt me for 3-4 months after; Dr. Mascarenhas’ work was flawless! I’m very thankful for the staff’s experience and professionalism.”
